Good training treats for a picky small dog?
Question by !*With Smoke Comes Fire*!: Good training treats for a picky small dog?
What are some good treats for training a chihuahua foster dog who is picky about his treats. I’ve tried his kibbles and some puppy sized treats but they just aren’t enticing enough. I might get some little dog jerky or bacon treats, but I’ve also thought about cooking up some plain chicken and using really small pieces of that because it would smell better. What do you guys think? He’s an awesome foster, he just needs some training and confidence. Thanks a lot guys.

Go with the chicken.
My Chihuahua never liked treats. I finally got her to eat Pedigree’s Good Bites but they’re too big to use for training and crumble if you try to break them into smaller pieces.

my trainer uses hot dogs cut up to small pieces
Good treats are turkey hot dogs, liver squares microwaved, and any beef products that you can microwave .
I give my super picky Chihuahua “zukes mini naturals”. They are a very small soft/semi moist treat that my dogs love. They’re also only about 3 calories a piece so frequent feeding isn’t a problem. My dogs personally love the peanut butter flavor and the chicken flavor. They’re all natural too, no junk in them. They also love PureBites which is just a freeze dried ingredient and also low calories. My Chi loves the cheese kind.
People food–meats and cheese are the most appealing to dogs. Good things to try are: chicken, hot dogs, American cheese, string cheese, lunch meat, and for really hard to entice dogs: meat baby food. Dogs LOVE baby food (as long as it’s a meat flavor), you just carry a little jar around and give them a few licks each time they get rewarded. My dog goes crazy for it.
You don’t have to really cook chicken, though–I’ve bought a big bag of frozen chicken pieces. They come in little cut up cubes already cooked, you just need to thaw them in the microwave. It’s pretty convenient. I also use Kraft singles a lot, because it’s easy to just grab a slice.
