German shepherd a good dog for a family?
Question by : German shepherd a good dog for a family?
Hey I’m 12 and i have a twin brother a 2 3/4 yr old sister and another 2 little sisters that are 8-months.My mum said we have to move because the rent we pay at this house is 1000 dollars every month and mum said that 2 expensive so we are moving to another area that is really bad (because no other house will take 5 kids my mum has put as in a nice unit that has 3 bedroom and 3 bathrooms and a court yard in a nice part of the area) anyways my mum is still scared of robbers (this area is full of them) so me and my bro said we should get a german shepherd and she has agreed , but i have some questions .We only have a court yard which is not very big (the dog will not be aloud inside because mum worries about personal hygiene) we saw it when we drove past it and when we drove we saw 2 big dogs in it. so they do allow pets.before you say the court yard is going to be 2 small we plan on taking the dog 2 the beach 2 days a week and for a walk 2wice a day.the dog will be supervised form 8:30 all the way till 3:00 on week days when my mum is home but my mum will not go outside with it because she is not animal friendly and will only go outside if i am there.I am also mature for my age and have had dogs before and handled lots of cats when i was six. I will be the one taking care of the dog (because after a week my bro starts to get lazy.SO MY QUESTIONS are:
do you think the court yard is still going to be to small even though i will walk it 2wice a day and take him to the beach for a ran alot?
is a german shepherd going to be to big for me to handle (i have had big dogs before but they were very disobedient because we got them when they were fully grown and they had not been trained)
is the german shepherd a good watch dog for the family?and are they a family dog? (my mum will not let the 8 months next to it and only let the 2yr old next to it if i am there)
the court yard is just grass is can i teach my dog to go to the loo in one area?
my friend has a german shepherd and it bites her allot and i now it bites because its a puppy but most puppies i have meet dont bite so if i get a german shepherd puppy is it going to bite me (i dont like to be bit)
if a german shepherd is not going to be the right dog for me what is ? (it has to be big)
and if a german shepherd is the right dog do you have any tips on training it? and looking after it ?
also i want the dog to be friendly but also keep a watch on me and my family. If we go for a walk and someone approaches us (it has happened in this area as i said it is really bad and there are lots of strange men and even women) i need him to protect us
and one last thing is a male or female essayer to handle ?

What do you think? Answer below!

I would say it sounds like a good idea. Get a male and get him nutered. That way you don’t have to deal with heat seasons.
good dog
Well they are great family dogs, and have an instinct to protect it’s family, but then I feel most dogs do. They are also very intimidating bc they are known for being police dogs. And if they are trained well you shouldnbe able to handle. However they are working dogs and have energy that needs to be expended, otherwise they get bored and destructive. IMO walking 2 times a day and not having space to run free in a bigger yard would not be enough to satisfy your dog. My advice is to research and see if you can find something else that will be content with less outdoor space.
Maybe a mastiff? They only require light exercise.
German Shepherds are intelligent and active, but because they are large and full of energy and tend to be very mouthy, it may not be a good choice for your family because you have very small children in the home (it would be a better choice if all the kids were your age).
In general, having a dog is a deterent for thugs. Most bad people are looking for an easy target and do not like dogs which all dogs have the capability to bite and bark loudly. In other words, you don’t have to get a German Shepherd for protection – most any breed will do. I’d look at rescuing a breed that is a little better known for being a good family and young child dog. Getting a beware of dog sign is found to be almost as effective as having a sign stating your home is protected with an alarm system.
All puppies bite – whether they chew on toys or your clothes and fingers. Puppies go through teething and are excessive chewers at that stage. Also, puppies bite to investigate as well as to communicate a point.
You can train a dog to use one area of the yard. There are pheromone type of stakes that you can place in the corner and the dog will pee on that stake.
Male or female – if you have the dog castrated, then they are extremely similar in personality and I wouldn’t say one is easier over another. Both should be affectionate and protective and obedient.
