Question by Seashell: Dog Behavior Problem-won’t walk?
My dog who is about 11yrs and looks/acts like 4, has always been my cardio partner. Lately, when we go for a walk, he “puts on his brakes” and will not walk, then proceeds to smell and pee everywhere, for more than 5 min. He has never done this, how can I turn it around? Thank you for any advice -

he is 11 give him a break maybe he is tired or his bones are weak is he a big dog they tend to have arthritis and pain from walking

well dogs get tired too maybe he has arthritis and the running hurts so he would rather not do it take him to the vet and have his joints checked
There may be a female in heat nearby. Even if he is neutered he still knows.
There are a few reasons this could be happening. If there are new dogs around his route or a female that’s in heate especially, he’ll stop and pay attention to that.
Most likely a dog that age might be developing arthritis. Take him to your vet for examination. They have medication that will help him deal with the pain. Running when your joints ache is a very difficult thing, and if your running is such a well-established routine, he’ll resist even before it begins.
Does this dog ever show any signs of pain? Doeso he limp or even favour one of his legs? I agree that at his age he may have at least the beginnings of arthritis and his body is trying to tell him to slow down.
I think an 11 year old deserves the time to stop and sniff and do whatever he wants – I think he’s trying to tell you he needs to slow down. Wouldn’t hurt to have your vet check him – has he had his series of blood tests for seniors? There may be something going on with him that’s not readily obvious to the eye but he could be developing some kind of problem.
I would take him to the vet to make sure there is not a physical problem. He might have old age aches and pains and is not interested in running anymore.
my dogs 14 .It could be a sudden memory loss and head lights from a car can really make it act up.My dog started doing that we just keep the walks really close to our house so the dog can change his mind and go home.It sure beats carrying a 60 pound dog home.My dog gets some memory loss but we managed to do walks only when he wants to.I would also talk to the vet about using some glusamine to luberacate your dogs joints it starts to help after about 4 weeks on most dogs .
