crate training puppies?
Question by Victoria Nam: crate training puppies?
hi
i am going to get a puppy soon and since i am a student i will not be home during the day for about 6-7 hours. this does not mean no one will be home my mother will be home but people advise me to crate train my dog.
so am i suppose to just keep it in the cage while i am out at school ( during the whole 6 hours?) and let my mom let it out for potty and play with it for a bit?
also people said for sleeping to keep the dog in the crate. for these two events is the door suppose to be shut or open? and if shut do i actually keep it in there for such a long period of time? because i find that a bit cruel.
advise?

Puppies do well with crate training. Here’s a site to show you how to do this;

Hi!
Yes, crate training your puppy is a very good idea, I’ve always done it with all of my dogs. At first, when your dog is still a puppy, 6-7 hours is too long to live it in the crate. However, as it grows older, that amount of time should be absolutely fine. The crate should be a nice comfy place for your puppy and it should never be used as a punishment. Also, make sure there is water inside the crate. The door should be shut on all of these occasions. Don’t worry about being cruel, crate training is a perfectly humane thing to do, and actually, it is nice for a dog to have somewhere that it can go where it won’t be disturbed.
One last thing, make sure that you get the right sized crate, as the purpose of a crate is that there is enough space for the dog to turn around and lay down, but not enough space for it to be able to pee inside of the crate and be able for it not to be in their bed.
Hope this helps!
