Question by Saby: Confused about puppy vaccination schedule? Ok, so I’ve just been calling vets, and that actually confused me quite a bit about what the vaccination schedule should be. Think it was a bit of information overload. My breeder got my pup his first set of shots and heartworm dose at 6 weeks. We have him now, in his 7th week (He’s a doberman, which is recommended to go home at 7 weeks). When should his next set of boosters be? I also want to start him on obediance classes, and socializing him with other dogs, when should I begin those?
Best answer:

I know that it might be a bet of a stretch for you but try looking it up online. I had no, 0, zip, nada problem finding it online by using that thing at the top of the yahoo home page called the search bar. All you have to do is type in puppy vaccination schedule and guess what?! Links pop up and you can click on them and find a vaccination schedule.
Also no REAL breeder would send a puppy home with their new family at 6 or 7 weeks. Most people, if they are REAL breeders would wait until at the very minimum 8 weeks. You were taken.
First, it’s the LAW in most states that puppies cannot be sold or given away until 8 wks old. That includes Dobes. and your “breeder” didn’t do you any favors giving vaccinations at 6 wks. That’s too young to be effective and a waste of time and money. Puppies are covered by the mom’s immune system until then. No puppy gets heartworm dose until 12 wks and after a blood test from the vet to be sure they are clear. There is a lot of controversy out there over vaccination schedules. It’s easy to get confused, even the vets don’t all agree. The one I use is 8 wks, 11 wks, and 14 wks. Rabies at 16 wks.
Why not ask your vet? You certainly took the pup in for a well pup check, within 72 hours, as stated in the breeder’s contract.
OOPS! No reputable breeder would send a pup home before 8 weeks of age. As a matter of fact, it’s against the law, in most states, to release a pup to it’s new home before it’s at least 8 weeks old. Take the pup back to the backyard greeder, get your money back, and then turn them into your local animal control department.
Sooner than three week apart with the shots will do more harm than good. Most puppy kinder’ classes will have a minimum age set by the instructor.
7 Weeks was the norm for placing puppies for many years. When it became possible to have a puppies CERF exam done at 8 weeks many of us started holding our pups an additional week to have the eye exam done before we placed the pups. It very quickly became obvious that the extra week or so made a huge difference in socialization, so it then became the norm. The irony is that 99% of those that condemn placing pups before 8 weeks never bother to have the eye exams done. (which POs me to the MAX)
i got my pup at 7 weeks and started socializing her right away with people then with other pups and animals at about 9 weeks but its not really recommended til their third shots i believe. As for obediance class most trainers wont start them until their at least 10 weeks old because of the vaccinations. Although you should try teaching basic commands on your on before then.
By my count, it is illegal in 13 States to sell puppies under 8 weeks of age. 6 weeks is bay far the absolute best age to separate puppies from their mother AND each other. LEaving them together longer increase the chances of behavior problems especially dog aggression. Anyone that thinks leaving puppies together to fight (which is what they do) is somehow educational is completely baffled. There are also those who think chasing their mother around the kennel 24/7 somehow teaches them something as well…they are wrong. Until the pup has had shots, keep it out of areas with a lot of dog traffic. Other than that, you have the puppy at the perfect age to socialize it with people. A dog that is going to be a pet for a person has no need to gain any more attachment to other dogs…they simply need to tolerate them. I rpefer shots at 8, 12 and 16 ( at which time they also get rabies) weeks.

Boosters are normally done every 4 weeks. I start my puppies’ shots at 8 weeks, then they have them at 12 and 16.
7 weeks is too young to leave the litter – for ANY breed.
Call the obedience school/club and see at what age they start accepting pups for puppy class.
