bringing new puppy home?
Question by Gina: bringing new puppy home?
I have a 2 year old lab/border collie mix and I will be getting an australian shepard pup later this month.
we brought the puppy (Jack) home for a couple of hours the other day to meet Max(our other dog).
Max seemed fine with Jack but Jack was scared I think.
do you think he was scared because he was not used to being away from his mother, and I wonder if he will get over that pretty quick when he comes home for good.
thanks.
I never had this situation with Max,the older dog because he was found(a stray) and was more than happy to have a home, lol.
settled right in.
thanks guys.
Luli,
thanks, that is my Max,the light of my life.
the last sentence in your answer is scary, lol.
but I doubt Max will be trying to nibble on Jack, lol.
we brought Jack out here for a couple of hours to see how Max would react and he did very well.
wanted to play with him,but he’s to big.
he’s a big pup himself.

It’s a new place with new people & a new dog. Give him time to get used to everything. He’s scared! Good Luck!

Being away from mom is the major reason for his behavior. Within a week he should be just fine.
Of course the Australian SHEPHERD was scared. It’s normal. Yanking him out of his familiar environment is rather traumatic.
He was scared of everything; remember he is only a baby. Different people and surroundings frighten him and make him feel insecure. Yes, he will get use to the other dog and you and the house, etc. Time will make everything just fine. Be sure he has his own crate when you bring him home permanently and his own toys. Good luck!!
Your new puppy will be a bit scared at first until he gets used to his new surroundings so allow him all the time it takes to get settled in and then he will soon forget about being scared since he will have a loving family and a nice playmate.
He should be fine~~he just misses his mom. Give it around a week or so, and besides, puppies adjust very quickly
Oh my! You’re avatar pic looks just like the dog i grew up with! Lovely dog!
He would most certainly get over his fear, but maybe introducing both a dog and a new home to a puppy is a bit overwhelming.
I suggest that when you bring Jack home, you could possibly leave Max with a friend or something for a couple fo days.
The puppy will be able to smell Max on everything and be able to familiarise himself a little bit to not being with his mum and having a new home and a new family.
Then you can bring Max back in and the puppy will be more prepared.
In the wild, a dog from another pack would typically eat any puppies from other packs that they come across.
look at this adopted dog bible link… http://www.petfinder.com/dog-bible
there are several videos but i suggest watching “introducing dogs to one another” I would go into more detail but this short clip will teach you more than I can.
Bringing a new puppy home is a big change! He has only been around his mother and his litter mates and without them he will feel insecure in new surroundings.
I think it is completely normal for Jack to be scared and when you do bring him home for good I think Max will be a good support system for him.
Make sure that for the first couple of days (at least) you keep things pretty quiet around the house. Don’t try to overwhelm him with tons of people coming over to meet your new puppy.
This is a great time for you, your family, and Max to bond with Jack and help him become more and more confident. Jack will start feeling great in his new home after he gets over leaving his mother and siblings and realizes that he is perfectly safe!
