Bringing home my new puppy!?
Question by horsegalbe45: Bringing home my new puppy!?
Tomorrow morning we’re getting our new puppy! she is a 7 week old Golden Retriever poodle cross. I’ve done a ton of research but when it comes to bringing her home and the car ride i’ve gotten some mixed answers. Its a 6 hour car ride(yeah i know its way to long for a 7 week old puppy but wedon’tt really have a choice). We’re planning on stopping every 1- 1 1/2 hours to let her walk around and go to the bathroom and such. Is that what you wouldrecommend? if not what do you recommend?
We have also heard that for her first car trip you aren’t supposed to kennel her, and your supposed to hold her in a towl or blanket that’s been rubbed on her mom and litter mates. what do you think about that? thanks in advance! if you need any more info just ask.

haha we can’t handle two puppies at once. we had two for a while and it turned out they had been puppy mill and were supper nervous and fed off each others nervous energy. they were 1 1/2 when we had to get rid of them(one of them bit my 8 yr old brother and my mom works with kids so we couldn’t have dogs that bit) our family is a little scarred to have two at once right now lol. we’re thinking when the dogs two or so we might get another one. but we dk yet

yeah – all that you have said sounds good for that kind of car journey. just try to keep the little pup calm and happy. good luck with your new little friend!

well if she got spayed she’ll probably through up and be very calm the first week. The first week is the best time to bond with your dog. You can do what you want just relax.
good luck raising your new puppy. (:
Well knowing puppies I would say stop every hour don’t add the half. You could put her in the kennel but she will most likely whine the whole 6 hours, so I would take her out and get her socialized with you. everything else seems to be perfect for a puppy. I hope this helps!
Congrats!!! Well considering the pet your taking home is a puppy yes stop every 1 1/2 hrs to 2 hrs
But my dogs are older and they can hold it for 5 hrs. Yes I love that idea! make sure the blankets soft and warm.
I have two dogs they love being around each other! have you considered two? Ones ok but two may be happier but ones just fine!!! Make sure that when you stop let her have a potty break giver 10 min max that way she can stretch out and give her food and water on the breaks to!
Good luck!! Have fun with your new pet!!!!!! XD
a good way is to have a chew toy that her litter-mates or mother used and a towel that her mother rubbed on, and put them both in the crate. You can also add treats. You shouldn’t hold the puppy just in case anything happens. i would keep the crate next you though, you can open the crate and pet her, it will be easier on her.And stopping every 1- 1 1/2 hours is a good idea! there might be some crying at first but once she’s comfortable she’ll stop! good luck(:
I think what you’ve said sounds just right. Every one-two hours she should be let out, the blankets are a great idea so I think that about covers it! And keeping her out of the crate is a good idea because she could get scared, but maybe if she falls asleep and you want to move around it would be safe for her to go in a crate, but that’s up to you.
Good luck with your pup! Take good care of her.

P.S
People have said that to comfort puppies, take a warm water sack and put it under the blankets she’s laying on.
I would bring a kennel with you in case you need it, and line it with old towels. Seven hours is a long time to be holding a young puppy, and chances are good that you and the pup might need a break. I would suggest mixing the ride with time in the kennel, and time out. I would also bring a thermos of water, and let her have a drink at your rest stop visits.
Well You are not suppose to bring that puppy home until she is 8 -12 weeks old as they need to be socialized longer with their mother and litter mates. As bring her home In the kennel is the safest 90% of the time while in the car are going to be sleeping and what if you were in a car accident you would want her to be protected as you would wear a seat belt well a kennel is her seat belt. Stopping every hour is a good idea But those high way truck stops are very unsanitary and a puppy that dose not have but a first set of shots should not be in contact with soil that could be contaminated with disease so I suggest a potty pad. Believe me I have a shih tzu puppy and we went out of town 3 weeks ago when she was 9 weeks old we used potty pads for her to potty on we placed them on the ground and she wouls go on them.

A blanket smelling like Mom is great it helps them adjust to lie at the new home.
