Best way to House Break Lab Puppy?
Question by : Best way to House Break Lab Puppy?
I’m currently crate training him. He sits in the crate and whimpers a little but his whining has gone down. He knows where the door is to go outside also. Now he’s peed inside and i’ve said “No” and I bring him outside for 15 minutes but he dosen’t go. I bring him in and he pees. Please someone help me. He’s 9 weeks old and a Chocolate Lab.

I don’t know if you’re bringing him outside on a leash, but if not, that’s what I would recommend trying first. Bring him to a particular spot in the yard, and stay there until he pees. (You can stack the odds of this working quickly by giving him a drink about 20 minutes before). After he pees, then you have some outdoor playtime. Point being, that if you’re taking him outside and playing and just hoping that he’ll pee at some point, it’s understandable that he’ll be having too much fun to remember to pee.
Crate training is a great idea, and he should be in a crate (or in a pen on tile floor) whenever you are not paying close enough attention that you could notice him about to pee and pick him up before it happens.

When this dog pees in the house and you see him, AS SOON AS YOU SEE THIS, grab the dog by his collar (noot choking him) and drag him to the backyard and say “OUT OUT OUT OUT OUT OUT OUT!” on your way until he is out back. then sayno! go peepee’s or go poopoos. this workedwith many dogs. It should work with yours. Also when you take him out bring a treat and dont let him see it. When he goes out, if does his buisness, praise him and when he comes in, give him that treat and show that this is good to do the buisness out, not in.
well usually around the time u know he pees try taking him outside and stay out there for about an hour play with it and then it might have too use it …. and just keep doing that till it gets used to it
good lucky on your dog mine is 5 months and 2 weeks old and today i was trying to play with it but he looks very down and sick , very thin …. idk what to do with hime im pretty sure he might die tho :’(
Puppies can be stubborn. Best thing is to create a routine, good job by starting on the crate training. Keep him in the crate at night and let him out immediately when you wake up in the morning, praise him when he potty’s outside. He should stay in the crate when you are not at home and under supervision when you are (don’t let him out of your sight or he will sneak out of sight and potty there). Make sure you take him outside 20 minutes after he eats a meal and often when you are home during the day or night. Keep him out there until he potty’s outside and praise him then too. Main thing to remember is that it takes time and patience for the training to stick. Clean thoroughly any areas that he’s had accidents on or he will continue to go there. Block any areas that become problems (the basement, an unused bedroom, etc) from his access, these are prime places to hide for what he wants to do. Remember also that puppies have small bladders and need to go out a lot more often than older dogs. Good luck!

This is what we always do with puppies. When they eat and finish take them outside. When they drink, take them outside. When they wake up from a nap, take them outside. If hes been sleeping for a couple hours and it’s late and you want to go to bed…and dont want to wake up to a squishy pile beside your bed…wake him…let him wake up a bit…then take him outside. He might want to eat when he comes back in…or play, but will settle down quickly once you lay down and see’s you are not getting up. As soon as you wake up in the morning…keep an eye on him and the second he wakes up…take him outside.
This has always worked for us. always. you have a few accidents, but as long as YOU the OWNER pay attention and prevent accidents rather than just yelling at a young pup after the fact..he will be trained in less than two weeks. Ours always are. Of course it sucks to stand in the rain to wait for him to go…but i am sure if you could train him to use a toilet…hed probably enjoy it more than trying to poop in the rain while some human dances behind him yelling at him to hurry up
Some people wait 20 minutes..but if you watch you pup…he usually eats..when he is done eating he poops!
My theory on this…they have little parts. when one gets full one needs to be emptied. Oh…big thing…when he goes outside pet him and tell him what a good dog he is!! Positive praise works as a good reminder! poop outside get told im good! poop inside and everyone freaks out and yells at me!
I only use the crate when I can’t watch the puppy. See my answer at http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110321204022AAOaU3P
