Being active with my Dogs…What should I do?
Question by Anna: Being active with my Dogs…What should I do?
My Fiance and I have 3 dogs. A 1yr old Boxer Greyhound Mix, a 6month old Dachshund, and a 6 month Old Australian Shepherd.
We want to get our Dogs involved in dog sports or activities to build our bond with them and also because we believe that a Dog should be a dog and not a little furry person (we made that mistake with 1 of our cats!)
But I am unsure of what to do with my Dachshund.
He is a smart little dog with a Big personality, big heart, and loves ANY and ALL people. He also Loves being outside and can find any signs of a rabbit in about a mile radius.
I originally wanted to get involved with earth dog, but as his personality grew and developed, I am wondering if Maybe doing Therapy work would be more fitting for him.
What do you think I should do? What direction seems most fitting for this little dog?
Also: Once my fiance and I are living together again come may (stupid Law school) We intend on getting all three dogs through obedience classes and working towards their Canine Good Citizen certification.
We want to do Agility with the Aussie, he has the drive for it.
We are waiting till we get some obedience classes under our belts for the Mix, right now she is to hard to peg. She may just be a play fetch down by the boat launch kind of dog.

Sounds like you have some good ideas. How about some earthdog trials or lure coursing for your little guy? If he chases rabbits then he would be really good at both of those sports.
You could try flyball and agility as well.

Therapy work is very rewarding, but you will probably need to do the obedience classes for the CGC first. When we did therapy work with our dogs, we needed to have that certificate. but i say, go for it! It’s a great thing for you, your dog, and the patients!
bike, or morning jog… i bike my puppy to the dog park and back…
Well first of all the thing is that yeah dogs are not furry people. They love to be with people and like to play.If you want to get more involved with your dogs just have fun with them and keep taking them to the classes because I have a dog that uses the restroom everywhere in our house.
take ya dog huntin cuz da grouse are hard to find in da brush when deys dead. It might help ya dog ‘bond’ with you. also yer dog gets a workout chasin down the grouse. Dogs luv to run around in fields or forests.
If you live in a city: you should probably take your dog on a jog through your neighborhood.

All three dogs can train for agility (as you have a mix – I suggest NADAC, USDAA or CPE). But if your Boxer/Greyhound mix doesn’t like agility then you could do AKC with your two other purebreds.
My old smooth dachshund LOVED agility. He was quite good and received his master titles in the Excellent levels. As you know it is important to keep your doxie fit and trim — agility really strengthen his back — we never any back problems and I believe this to be related to all the strength he gained through agility. Also even more than agility — he ADORED earth-dog and ratting. It is what they are bred to do — some dogs get it in an instant and other take some time to warm up. Definitely go to a few ED tests. It is not really something that you can train like agility. My ED club only meets 3-4 times a year for practice. Some people live in the country and have permanent dens dug on their property – so they invite people up now and again. But definitely go to 1-3 tests. It is so exciting to see you dog totally in rapture doing what he is bred to do.
You may chose to also try some herding with your Aussie. I say go for agility first — all three dogs can try that. GOOD LUCK!!!
