Anyone know a good brand of treats for training and rewards?
Question by Courtney R: Anyone know a good brand of treats for training and rewards? I’m really interested in getting treats for my puppy. I’ve taught him a few basic commands (sit, stay, and shake) using bits of cheese but I would prefer a treat that is actually meant for puppies! I want something that is tasty, and would motivate my puppy for training.

Answer by greygarious Packaged training treats are expensive garbage, nutritionally. You are better off with the tiny cheese cubes, slivers of hot dog, or pellets of premium CAT kibble. Cat food has more protein, fat, and aroma than dog food. A box will last you for a very long time. Probably the MOST aromatic is Greenies dental treats made for cats. Tiny but potent, they really get the dog to focus.

My friend who does every dog sport with her collies introduced us to the Zukes line of training treats. She says you need a mixture of high value (hot dog bits, liver), mid value (Zukes) and low value (kibble) treats.
The treats I use to train are actually a dog food. I use Purina’s Moist and Meaty in the beef flavor (I think) They are already in bite sized chunks, easy to chew and they come individually packaged. I’ve found that one package is just about right for a training session with my 2 dogs. They are very high in protein though so make sure you subtract the calories that are in them from your puppy’s meal so he doesn’t bulk up. Even though they are meant for adults, I’ve never had a problem feeding them to puppies, even those as young as 9 weeks.
