I read that to get a CPDT-KA (Certified Pet Dog Trainer- Knowledge Assessed) you need at least 225 hours of experience as a “Head Trainer” or instructor. I couldn’t find many places that hire people as dog trainers if they aren’t certified, so it’s hard to get that experience. However, to my knowledge Petsmart trainers aren’t required to be certified. All the website says is: “PetSmart Accredited Pet Training Instructors complete a rigorous education in problem solving, canine ethology, genetics, behavior and learning theory, with a curriculum developed by both leading trainers and animal behaviorists.” So for anyone who is or knows a Petsmart trainer- What’s the training (as in the training to become one) like? How old do you have to be? What kind of experience/education do you need?
I think my question is being misunderstood. I’m not asking if I should go there for dog training classes- I’m asking how I can BECOME a trainer… I realize they’re not the best, but not many places hire non-certified trainers and I need the experience.

i’m 18, never trained a dog in my life and i trained a pit bull to sit, come, down, no and stop.
do it yourself. anybody can because i had no idea what i was doing!

I would not recommend Petsmart for obedience training or grooming.
I watched a couple of their obedience classes & it was just all vocal & no actual training or working of the dogs. I head a few questions being asked, the the instructor could not answer the questions.
I like a class to be at least 5 to 10 dogs & owners & work the whole class at the same time. This way every one gets the same instructions & are shown how to train a dog for specific things. Every dog sits at the same time. They are being socialized. There are many advantages for training like this.
I went to school to learn how to train dogs. Aztec School of Canine Training. It is closed now due to the owner having hang glider accident. The school specialized in aggression training. Back when I went to school it cost $ 4,000 for an 8 to 10 month course. I don’t know what it runs now cause that was over 30 yrs ago.
Keep looking, you will find a place where you feel right at home. Don’t settle for any less than what you want.
