Question by Erikku: Animal Psychology: Help My dog takes the runt under the bed with her mouth? I’m not sure what it means, but the runt puppy, we’re feeding it with a bottle and it’s unsure if she will survive and the mom took her using her mouth under the bed, what’s it mean?

Answer by Jayse Ö Think before you breed it means you are not keeping her safely confined in a whelping pen where she cannot carry around the “runt” and risk injuring it.

If you bottlle feed the baby she should be fine! my moms chihuahua had 4 puppies and took 2 under the bed. we thought that she was trying to kill them or something so we took them and put them next to her again, and again she put the runt under the bed. we picked the runt up and bottle fed her and now their all fine. NONE out of her litter died. just bottle feed her once every 2 hours, or more if she wants. the mom has to lick her butt so she will poop or pee, so if you just bottle feed her and put her back with mom then in a while, bottle feed her again, she will be fine and so will mom. Just watch them to make sure the mother doesnt try to put them under the bed again.
Im not guessing like everyone else that has answered so far. this actually happened with my dogs and their all fine! we gave the mom some doggie vitamins because she got sick to. she has had a tough life, and gotten sick alot, and yes she probably did pass on a few bad genes onto her baby, but they are all fine and HYPER as puppies should be. their 2 years old now. the mom was not perposely bred. we thought she was pregnant but werent sure and sure enough she was.

Yes it happens in the wild, this runt would die, for good reason. Your dog passes on bad genes.
