Adopted a new puppy. Any housebreaking tips? Help with getting him to sleep through the night?
Question by casey_leftwich, Virtuous Egoist: Adopted a new puppy. Any housebreaking tips? Help with getting him to sleep through the night?
We just got a new puppy. He’s about 6 weeks old. We would like some housebreaking tips. He also wakes up in the middle of the night crying and won’t stop until we come hold him. Any tips on stopping that?
Also, he won’t drink much. He won’t drink any water and will barely drink milk. Any tips on how to get him to drink?
He’s half chihuahua and half feist.

You have to take him out every 20 min or so to get him to know that outside is where he needs to go ( or train him to use a kitty litter box, I had a pom that did that but it took a lot of work)
also DONT hit him if he has an accident, tell him no, clean the spot and redirect
as for the whining at night that is usual, you can try putting a ticking clock in the room with him, I used a clothes basket, filled it with warm blankets, pout the clock under there for a comforting sound and wrapped my puppy up and put it in there- his whining stopped
The drinking bit can be because of the change in habitat, though if he doesnt drink soon take him to the vet, you dont want him getting dehydrated

when he starts to whine, you need to take him outside and they don’t calm right down afterwards either. i would have to play with my pup for about 10 min then he was ready to go back to bed. when he’s thirsty, he’ll drink, just show him where the water is and push his muzzle down in it. he’s just been taken away from his mom, so he’s used to hearing her heartbeat and her warmth. he’ll get over it. it’ll probably take him a couple more weeks to get used to everything.
