Dog Training Hand Signals
Dog Training Hand Signals
Article by Mike Sorian
Using dog training hand signals in addition to your verbal commands when you are obedience training your dog can be very useful. The hand signals work even when your dog cannot hear you, so they are a great way to ensure your dog pays attention to you even from a distance. So, as long as a dog that has learned hand signals can see you, he will listen to your commands-even when he cannot hear you. When training agility dogs or hunting dogs, handlers can control their dog’s actions in the field simply by using hand signals. Just by using the appropriate hand signal, the handlers command their dog to do the right action.
It is best to teach your dog the hand signals at the same time you are teaching the obedience exercises. Any good dog training program will explain the different standard hand signals and how they are used for training your dog at home. You can even use hand signals of your own invention as long as your are consistent in using the same movement each time.
In nature dogs pay a lot of attention to body language, so the hand signal training is easily understood by your dog. So, if you are just starting with your dog’s obedience training, introduce the dog training hand signals right now. Of course, even if your dog is already trained to follow verbal commands, it is not too late to introduce the hand signals to him now. Get started by using the hand signals to teach the basic steps-sit, down and stay. This way you are following the usual route of obedience training anyway. Teaching these first 3 hand signals to your dog, prepares him for easily learning all the other hand signals.
* To teach the hand signal for sit you should bend your arm upwards at the elbow and raise your hand or closed fist up to the side of your head at the same time you command him to sit. Be sure to repeat the same sit hand signal each time you say sit, so your dog can quickly associate the vocal command with the hand signal. * To teach the hand signal for the down position you should hold your arm out straight from the shoulder and then lower your hand with the palm facing down towards the floor. Use this hand signal at the same time that you are giving your pet his down command. The idea of this hand signal is that your dog will follow the direction of your hand and associate it with lying down on the floor. * Teaching the hand signal for stay is done by using the policeman’s hand sign to stay-holding your arm outstretched towards your dog with the palm facing him. You should be making this hand signal at the same time you verbally command your dog to stay.
If your aren’t already training your dog with hand signals, you should start now. It is a good feeling to know you can control your dog even if he cannot hear you for some reason. Enjoy the confidence of knowing you can call your dog back with a hand signal, even if he is playing quite far away.
