Getting boxer puppy. Potty training question?
Question by ANTM: Getting boxer puppy. Potty training question?
I’ll be getting a female boxer pup next week, I kno there will be accidents, especially in about 2 months when I get my own place because I work full time. However, when my pup is about 2 months old she’ll be home in her crate for about 6 hours. About how long until she will be able to hold her urine till someone gets home??
I’m trying to work with my work schedule to come home on lunch breaks but it’s still in the works.. ne suggestions or ideas??
Oh I know she’ll be out of her kennel as soon as I get home ![]()
Throught the night wont be an issue becuase I’ll be there and taking her out but its the 6 hr days I’m worried about

Well by the time my puppy (boxer/beagle) was about 4 months old she could hold her bladder for about nine hours. So six shouldn’t be bad. But be sure not to have her in her crate so much that she despises it within a couple of weeks.

Training tips for my pup..?
Question by : Training tips for my pup..?
1) Crate Training – I’ve started Crate Training, and it’s actually going really well. Is there a better way to do the training other then crate training?
2) What’s the proper way to scold my puppy when she has an accident on the floor?
3) When can I start flea treatment for my puppy? (I’m gonna use Frontline Plus, but don’t know when is safe)
4) What are some good deworming products that are ideal to use?
5) Leash Training – I’m kind of confused in leash training. One guide says not to tug on the leash, just to stop and wait for the puppy. Other guides say keep walking even if your puppy is being dragged. I’m kind of confused as to which one to do, cause I don’t want my dogs paws all scratched up, but I don’t want her to think it’s okay to be stubborn.
Also for deworming, is Heartgard fine for my puppy? I know she has worms, don’t know what kind, because in her feces, there’s a lot. Heartgard kills roundworms, hookworms and heartworms. Is this recommended?

House training an outside dog?
Question by faqpro: House training an outside dog?
Now im training my 5 yr old dog, to become an inside dog. He has been an outside dog his whole life.I also have a male cat. The cat will come up to him and just bite him, and they will wrestle making weird noises. Its almost like they are domination each other. Will they start peeing everywhere? How do i get them to get along? How do i housebreak my dog?

Answer by Renay R
First you need to make sure that both the cat and dog are neutered. It might be easier than you think to potty train your dog. He is already use to going potty outside. Just make sure you are patient with him for the first few months. Let him outside about every 30 minutes and when he does go potty outside then make sure to reward him! You are doing the right thing. Your dog will forever be great full!

Dog behavior problem when going out on walks?
Question by : Dog behavior problem when going out on walks?
I have a year old female Pitmatian (pit mixed w/ Dalmatian.
She was a stray (5months old) and nobody I knew could take her in and I really didn’t have the heart to just drop her off at a pound. She showed signs of physical abuse and was a very shy/scared dog. She would run and hide when I picked up a broom, shoe or a belt. When it came to walks she was ridiculously scared she stayed still and was scared of pedestrians specially older men.
Overtime she started overcoming her fears she was more comfortable with people and eventually she looked forward for the walks and would chase/play with the broom whenever I cleaned. Of course I showered her with affection and so did my friends and family. I let her sleep on my bed because she knows that she can only get on when I motion her to. I don’t know if it’s just her playing or if she’s protesting but she grabs my leg with her 2 front legs when i walk herand doesn’t bite me but she kinda slobbers on my leg. When I walk her I always make her walk on my right side . She only does this when she tries to cut me off and I don’t allow her to. Is there any way to show her it’s wrong? I usually stop and say No Cleo! But she still does it. Any pointers? How much affection and when should affection be given to her? Someone remarked the other day that she became spoiled so I really don’t wAnt her to think she’s the leader

Q&A: Training my chocolate lab puppy?
Question by joe h: Training my chocolate lab puppy?
Hello,
I have a 8 week old lab puppy. I would like to teach it some cool tricks, speak, play dead, etc anything like that. I would prefer to learn how to do it myself and not have to take the pup to a “personal trainer” so I know for next time. Any tips from people that trained their dogs to get a cool trick would be appreciated! Also, please post some websites that explain a few of these tips (other than the housebreaking and the other simple training.) Thanks.
Yes, I understand the basics of starting with sit and so forth. Im looking for something more advanced that people did, such as the bark “speak” example (thanks!) Let’s assume Im not taking it to a personal trainer so please don’t write that (I would rather have my dog used to me and it can be a learning experience for both of us)!
Sigh….I KNOW 8 weeks it too soon to teach it to do any advanced tricks but I’m asking in advanced so I can get info now instead of too late. NO MORE POSTERS ABOUT TAKING TO Dog SCHOOL PLEASE!! I do appreciate the responses, but let’s not waste each other’s time with those posts. Thanks, sorry to be rash!

Training my husband to train the dog?
Question by ThatsMe: Training my husband to train the dog?
My husband and I just got a dog (a week and a half ago). I guess my husband has less experience with dogs than I anticipated. Also, we have different ideas about how to train the dog. We’re going to take classes, but as of yet, it’s just us on our own. I know a bit about dogs and have been reading the training books. They all say to use positive reinforcement and not negative. I mean, okay, say “no” if the dog jumps on the counter, but don’t hit the dog or anything. I agree with this, and this is how my family trained dogs when I grew up. Anyway, my husband has different ideas and seems to have no patience with the dog. I’ll admit getting the dog was my idea, but I didn’t expect such marital conflict over it. He’s generally not that great at training the dog (I mean, he doesn’t seem to understand what to do). Then, today he hit the dog (albeit lightly) when he poked him in the balls. I got upset and said not to ever do this because I didn’t agree with this type of training. My husband got all upset and said I was calling him violent and that we had to show the dog what was right and wrong. I say we just need some patience and the positive reinforcement will work fine (i.e. ignoring the dog unless he sits nicely and doesn’t poke you in the balls — then pet him and give him attention at that time). Anyway, what can I do? I need to find a way to make this work so that my husband learns how to do this, and we don’t have so much conflict. Am I being unreasonable and overly controlling here???

Answer by ♥ Beardies
Ok I had to laugh.
My Beardie has a tendency to always jump on the bed and step on my bf’s “junk”. . always on accident.
Your husband needs a quick lesson in basic canine thought process. Going to an obedience class and hearing it from a third party might drive home that point. The trainer can show you good and bad ways to discipline your dog.
Until then, give your husband a dog training book and tell him to read up. The people who write those books know more than he does.

How do I get my Jack Russell puppy to?
Question by chrisxx90: How do I get my Jack Russell puppy to?
use the training pads? He ends up sleeping on it or ripping it up
Best answer:
Answer by dogmom
Try training him without puppy pads, the old fashioned way… outside.
Puppies learn new skills at different rates. It will take time for your puppy to develop a firm understanding of where it’s acceptable to potty and where it is not. It will take time for your pup to consistently understand that all of the house is the den, an area not to be soiled.
http://www.dogownersdigest.com/news/libr…
Puppies need to relieve themselves frequently, sometimes as often as once an hour. There will be many accidents, especially at first. Consistency is the key!

What are some good dog training systems?
Question by : What are some good dog training systems?
I want to train my dogs but cant afford to put all three of my labs through individual training. Id like to get something where i can do it in my own home that’s not too expensive and that i can use on all of my dogs.I just need a little more then basic training so that they will not bark, and go nuts when new guest arrive. Also i like to have then out to play and i cant have them running around when they aren’t in a confined ares.
Best answer:
Answer by AussieLover09
If your looking for full systems for free YouTube has great videos but for individual techniques I trained my dogs to stay calm at new guests by teaching them “stand stay”. Then my guests start from the dogs head and pet them. This way they get a short introduction to the guest and know they mean well. Training dogs should be adjusted according to the dogs personality and temperament.
What do you think? Answer below!
